Tactical Emergency Casualty Care instruction attended by responders
Over the last weekend of August, several responders from Silver Spring Ambulance and Rescue Association participated in the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care Class offered by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, held at the Harrisburg campus of HACC. Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) is a 16 hour instruction in the response to an active shooter event, and the delivery of responder and patient care throughout. Students are instructed in working directly with law enforcement during an event, as well as different methods of delivering patient care and evacuating them to safety. Although it is the hope that SSARA will never need to use these skills, we wish to remain vigilant in the face of current trends, and be prepared for such an eventuality. The training was initially developed for use by the military, and was modified by the NAEMT for civilian purposes. |

Misting Fans Purchased
With the warmest days of the summer yet to come, Silver Spring Ambulance and Rescue Association recently purchased three new misting fans, for the purpose of fire scene rehabilitation. These battery-powered fans will operate up to three hours on a single charge and connect either to a five gallon bucket or to a garden hose. With overexertion and medical emergencies showing as one of the leading causes of death to firefighters, Silver Spring Ambulance and Rescue Association takes seriously its responsibility to provide support and rehabilitation to firefighters at the scene of emergencies. The new misting fans will not only offer welcome relief to firefighters at a scene, but will also assist EMS by helping to create a common gathering point for firefighters in need of rehabilitation. The misting fans were purchased at the beginning of summer and one will be kept on each of SSARA's ambulances. |
