"Steer Clear"

Silver Spring Ambulance would like to remind drivers to slow down and move over for emergency apparatus.    Whether we are are responding to emergencies or operating on incidents involving highways/roadways, safety is the first priority for all emergency responders.   We would like to take this opportunity to share information from PennDOT regarding the laws concerning emergency incidents that all drivers should be familiar with.

The "Steer Clear " law requires drivers to move over or slow down when they encounter an incident along the side of the road.  The law applies any time an emergency vehicle has its lights flashing and where road crews or emergency personnel have lighted flares, posted signs or tried to warn motorists.   If law enforcement is not present at the time, the law allows road workers and emergency responders to report violations by motorists. Citations can then be issued by police based on these reports.

Steer clear for all emergency scenes, traffic stops, roadside assistance personnel (tow trucks).

Penalties include fines up to $250 for failing to move over or slow down and license suspension if the violation results in injury of personnel.
